Soak the bread in the milk until very
soft. Mix in all the remaining ingredients except the butter or
margarine. Stir in half the butter or margarine, then spoon the
mixture into a greased 23 cm/9 in square cake tin (pan) and pour the
remaining butter or margarine over the top. Bake in a preheated oven
at 150°C/ 300°F/gas mark 3 for 1.5 hours, then increase the oven
temperature to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4 and bake for a further 30
minutes. Leave to cool in the tin.
