Method:
Rub the butter or margarine into the
flour, bicarbonate of soda, spices and salt until the mixture
resembles breadcrumbs. Mix in the fruit and sugar, then stir in the
milk until all the ingredients are well blended. Cover and leave
overnight.
Spoon the mixture into a greased and lined 20 cm/8 in cake tin (pan)
and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4 for 1 3/4 hours
until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean.
